Crankies

Crankies are a folk art used for visual story telling. A scroll is loaded into a box and cranked from one spool to another, allowing pictures to move across the box as a story is told or a tune is sung. Sometimes I think of crankies as analog TV, which amuses me. They had their heyday in the 1800s, when they were called moving panoramas. The first time I saw one, I became a little obsessed and had my own crankie box built within a week. I've been making crankies ever since.
